A Chirping Good Start to the Easter Holidays!
During a recent biodiversity site visit to Ballymena Quarry, Emma O'Brien and Rebecca Mitchell were delighted to hear about a mother duck and her ducklings spotted in the area by our quarry operator, Robin Christie. Their adventure took an unexpected turn when a little chick waddled over to them from underneath a shovel bucket!
Meet "Lucky Duck," who was rescued from a stockpile in a busy part of the quarry. Although attempts to reunite him with his family were unsuccessful, Emma, in the interim, took care of Lucky at home that evening to keep him warm and well-fed.
Due to bird flu precautions, petting zones cannot accept wild birds, and reaching wildlife rescue centres has proven challenging.
Lucky is temporarily with Rebecca and will probably grow up thinking he's a dog! We hope Lucky will be safely placed back into its natural habitat in due course.
