PRIORITISING HEALTH AND SAFETY
As a CRH business, the effective management of health and safety is our No. 1 Priority. This means that the health and safety is always the first item on the agenda of our meetings as we seek to further develop and embed our health and safety culture across the organisation.
Health and safety is continually monitored by management at all levels by way of specific key indicators with operational staff supported by a programme of audits and inspections as delivered by a dedicated team of health and safety practitioners under the guidance of Divisional Health and Safety Manager, Craig Chisholm.
PLANNING FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY
All operational areas of the Northstone Materials business implement health and safety plans to ensure continuous improvement in this critical aspect of our activities. The delivery of such plans is overseen by relevant senior managers and monitored by the Divisional Health and Safety Manager.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY
The Managing Director is responsible for the implementation of the Northstone Materials Health, Safety and Welfare Policy with the oversight of the Policy requirements delegated to the Health and Safety Director.
The Policy also specifies the individual health and safety responsibilities of managers and all other employees. This means that in everything we do we expect our employees to consider accidents and respect not only their own safety but everyone’s safety whether they be fellow employees, customers, clients, members of the public or any other person.
SETTING A STANDARD FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY
Northstone Materials is accredited to OHSAS 18001, the internationally recognised standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. This externally verified certification demonstrates the Northstone Materials commitment to reducing accidents, legal compliance and continual improvement in our health and safety performance.
The benefits accruing to Northstone Materials having the OHSAS 18001 are many and including the following:-
- Awareness and compliance with legal obligations.
- Illustrates health and safety credentials to clients, suppliers, employees and all other stakeholders.
- Protects the health, safety and wellbeing of employees, sub-contractors and the public.

Our approach to employee engagement in health and safety has developed a culture where employee contributions are sought, welcomed and valued as together we strive to reduce the number of accidents and incidents of work related ill health in our workplaces.
HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Northstone Materials continues to promote and monitor employee health and wellbeing through various initiatives and health monitoring arrangements. All employees are offered a comprehensive health assessment each year along with more specific arrangements for those employees who undertake safety critical roles. Health surveillance is also undertaken where employees work with substance or undertake processes which may result in exposure to substances which have known adverse effects on health. Health promotion within the Company can take various forms ranging from weight loss challenges and fitness campaigns to healthy eating programmes and outdoor activities. A Financial Assistance Scheme is also available to all employees in respect of assisting with the cost of medical and dental treatment.

- National Federation of Roofing Contractors – Gold Award for Excellence in Health and Safety
- Northern Ireland Safety Group – Consistent High Achiever Award in Mineral Extraction Quarrying and Product Manufacturing
CRH LIFE SAVING RULES
As a CRH Company, Northstone (NI) Limited is also obligated to comply with the CRH 16 Life Saving Rules which are mandatory requirements which form the basis of our health and safety strategy. The Rules have also led to a Minimum Mandatory Framework for Health and Safety Management across the business.
