Falcon Fanatics Flock to Ballymena

In May, Quarry & Asphalt Division hosted a Quarry Visitors’ Day at Ballymena to coincide with IMA European Minerals Day and the launch of the BBC programme Return Of The Raptors, which focuses on Northern Ireland’s peregrine falcon population and includes the role of quarrying in boosting their numbers.

In addition to Northstone stands displaying quarry products and details on health & safety, there were also exhibits from RSPB, Roads Service, QPA and the NI Raptor Study Group.  The latter had acted in an advisory role on the Return Of The Raptors programme and had set up telescopes within the quarry to allow visitors to observe the nesting peregrine falcons.  A guided tour of the quarry was also provided to give visitors an insight into the workings of the aggregate production process and for them to view some of the plant and machinery used.  The day saw 56 visitors (including 34 children) and was received with great enthusiasm and very positive feedback, with comments including:

“Excellent tour and good to see nature combined with industry.”

“Very good and interesting day.”

“Great morning!  Brought 10 children (birthday party).  They enjoyed it and so did I.  Learned loads and enjoyed the birds of prey!...Thanks.”

“Relaxed yet efficient tour.”
